In short, all it takes for the poor to be lifted up from their empty-stomached, teary-eyed existences is for a few good men ? white ones, naturally ? to behave more ethically and caringly. It’s the White Tax Man’s Burden. In focusing on Bono’s alleged hypocrisy, the protesters are actually trying to bridge the gap between the Bono persona (saviour of Africa) and the Bono reality (he pays his taxes in a weird way). That is, they want him to become what he claims to be ? the Moral Viceroy of Africa ? and to show the Dark Continent how to reach the light. A plague on both their houses. If there are any African bands playing at Glastonbury I hope they lay into the Bono Pay Up lobby, and then use its silly placards to wallop Bono. Regardless of the season or whether it's sunny or cloudy, everyday your eyes are exposed to invisible, damaging UV radiation. In the same way UV rays damage the skin, they also damage the lens and retina of the eyes. Furthermore, just as people with fair skin burn more easily, people with lighter color eyes can sustain damage more quickly to their eyes. Unfortunately, this damage is cumulative and?cannot be reversed. If you don't protect your eyes the risk?for cataracts, macular degeneration, and skin cancer and other disorders increases. In some cases these diseases can even?result in?blindness. Fortunately, these devastating diseases can be prevented by wearing sunglasses. Be Smart - Wear Sunglasses See all 5 photos Sunglasses are even more important for children because they usually spend more time outdoors, and their eyes are more vulnerable to sun damage. Sun Damage Risks Four types of light?can damage your eyes.?These are UVC, UVB, UVA, and HEV rays. . UVC rays (100-280 nm) have the highest energy and the abiity to do the most damage. Fortunately, almost all of these rays are blocked by the ozone layer. However, with the depletion of the ozone, these rays could cause more damage in the future. UVB rays have less energy than UVC rays. These rays can cause photokeratitis. UVA rays (280-315 nm) have less energy than UVB rays. However, they can pass through the cornea and reach the lens and retina. These rays are linked to an increase in cataracts and macular degneration. HEV rays (400-500 nm) have the least amount of energy between the four. These rays can deeply penetrate the eye and damage the retina. Research has shown people with low blood plasma levels of vitamin C and antioxidants are more prone to HEV radiation damage. In addition to the type of rays, there are risk factors too. UV levels are greatest near the equator and at higher altitudes. Both UV and HEV rays are greater between 10AM and 2PM and in wide open spaces. When reflective surfaces are present such snow, sand, and pavement, the levels are even greater. However, urban settings reduce the levels because tall buildings shade the reflective streets. Certain medications can also increase your eye's sensitivity to light. These medications include tetracycline, birth control pills, sulfa drugs, diruretics, and tranquilizers. NEFF Chip Sunglasses Amazon Price: $24.99 Types of Sun Damage to the Eyes Sun damage can cause several eye disorders. Photokeratitis, pinguelculaie, and pteryguim can all be caused by excessive exposure to the sun.??Your risk for cataracts, macular degeneration, and cancer of the surrounding skin of the eye also increase. Photokeratitis is a burn on the cornea. Also called snowblindness, this condition is caused by UVB radiation from the reflection of snow at high altitudes. Pteryguim are small or large benign growths in which the conjuntiva grows into the cornea. . Although the exact cause is unknown, it is associated with excessive exposure to wind, sunlight, or sand. Although most people do not experience any symptoms, a large growth may cause astigmatism. Pingueculum is a yellowish patch on the white or sclera of the eye. It may feel like there is something in the eye. Cataracts occur when the protien of the lens clumps together and causes cloudiness. Macular Degeneration is caused by the degeneration of the macula, and it affects central vision. You get what you pay for. The cost of manufacturing sunglasses that meet or exceed the minimum safety standards are a major factor in the cost of manufacturing sunglasses. Choose sunglasses that filter out at least 99% of the UVB rays and 95% of UVA rays. Never assume they are good sunglasses. Check the label for the sun protection rating. Contrary to what some people think, the color and darkness of the lens does not protect against UV light. . However, it does offer protection from HEV or blue light. Colors that do well at blocking blue light are bronze, copper, and reddish-brown. Bigger lenses and wrap-around lenes offer more protection. Furthermore, look for lenses that fit close to the eye. If you participate in sports, you may want to consider lenses made out of polycarbonate or Trivex. They are more impact resistant. Lenses that are too dark can cause the pupils to dilate and allow uva radiation to damage the lens and retina. Polarized lenses - Polarized lenses reduce glare from reflective surfaces. When light strikes a surface, rather than light scattering in all directions, it travels horizontally. This can create more glare and distortion. For fishermen/women, boaters, skiers, or other outdoor enthusiasts, polarized lens can be a good choice to reduce glare from horizontal surfaces. However, they may make it more difficult to see liquid crystal displays. According to Wikipedia, "The only way to assess the protection of sunglasses is to have the lens measured, either by manufacturer or by a properly equipped optician...The only visible quality test for sunglasses is their fit." Although there are contact lenses that filter out UV rays too, they don't block out as many rays as sunglasses. Therefore, it is better to wear sunglasses anyway. Wearing a wide-brimmed hat in addition to sunglasses can also help protect your eyes. Furthermore, when your swimming, wearing goggles can also help protect your eyes from the sun and bacteria. Since UV rays are still present during the fall and winter, you should still wear sunglasses. Conclusion You only?recieve one pair of eyes.?Since sun damage can occur regardless of the season or weather, and the effects are cumulative, wearing sunglasses everyday is important. ?Furthermore, since children usually spend more time outdoors, and their eyes are more vulnerable to damaging rays, experts believe as much as 80% of our exposure to UV rays occurs by the age of 18. Considering this information, every member of your family should have a quality pair of sunglasses. The driver, a young man in a Brioni suit, Gucci shoes, RayBan sunglasses and YSL tie, leaned out the window and asked the cowboy, If I tell you exactly how many cows and calves you have in your herd, will you give me a calf? Bud looks at the man, obviously a yuppie, then looks at his peacefully grazing herd and calmly answers, Sure, Why not? The yuppie parks his car, whips out his Dell notebook computer, connects it to his Cingular RAZR V3 cell phone, and surfs to a NASA page on the Internet, where he calls up a GPS satellite to get an exact fix on his location which he then feeds to another NASA satellite that scans the area in an ultra-high-resolution photo. The young man then opens the digital photo in Adobe Photoshop and exports it to an image processing facility in Hamburg , Germany .. Within seconds, he receives an email on his Palm Pilot that the image has been processed and the data stored. He then accesses an MS-SQL database through an ODBC connected Excel spreadsheet with email on his Blackberry and, after a few minutes, receives a response. Finally, he prints out a full-color, 150-page report on his hi-tech, miniaturized HP LaserJet printer, turns to the cowboy and says, You have exactly 1,586 cows and calves. Thats right. Well, I guess you can take one of my calves, says Bud. He watches the young man select one of the animals and looks on with amusement as the young man stuffs it into the trunk of his car. Then Bud says to the young man, Hey, if I can tell you exactly what your business is, will you give me back my calf? The young man thinks about it for a second and then says, Okay, why not? Youre a Congressman for the U.S. Government, says Bud. Wow! Thats correct, says the yuppie, but how did you guess that? No guessing required. answered the cowboy. You showed up here even though nobody called you; you want to get paid for an answer I already knew, to a question I never asked. You used millions of dollars worth of equipment trying to show me how much smarter than me you are; and you dont know a thing about how working people make a living - or about cows, for that matter. This is a herd of sheep... Now give me back my dog. The Death of Ilyas Kashmiri Has Another Key al-Qaeda Leader Bitten the Dust Email Print Share Facebook Twitter Tumblr LinkedIn StumbleUpon Reddit Digg Mixx Delicious Google+ Comment Follow @TIMEWorld BBC Urdu reports that U.S. drone strikes in the Pakistani tribal agency of South Waziristan have killed eight militants, including Ilyas Kashmiri, a notorious jihadist who some suspect could even be al-Qaedas top operational commander. The U.S. had placed a $5 million bounty on Kashmiris head ? the grizzled fighter is linked to terror attacks across South Asia. He has evaded pursuers in the past: in 2009, reports circulated that he was slain by a drone strike in North Waziristan. But Kashmiri, known for always wearing Rayban sunglasses after losing an eye while fighting the Soviets, emerged unscathed. It appears now that his luck has run out. Kashmiris background, like that of most top al-Qaeda operatives, is shrouded in uncertainties. As his alias indicates, he was born in Mirpur, Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and was raised with a healthy animosity toward India. There are conflicting reports as to whether he ever served in the Pakistani Army, but its clear he trained and fought among the U.S.-backed Afghan mujahedin fighting the Soviets, a struggle that saw him lose both an eye and a finger . Joining the fundamentalists, Kashmiri went on to become an instrumental member of the Harkat-ul Jihadi-al-Islami, known as HUJI, a terrorist outfit that seeks to chase India out of the Kashmir valley, but also is linked to bomb plots in the West. According to Indian authorities, HUJI has spent years fueling fundamentalist terrorism, a key player (from dens in neighboring South Asian states like Bangladesh) in the insurgent activity roiling Kashmir and an accomplice to shocking assaults like the 2009 Mumbai terror strikes. For the Indians, bringing figures like Kashmiri to justice precedes any negotiated peace with Pakistan. Kahmiri, 45, is believed to head whats known as the 313 brigade, one of six operational units that make up the Lashkar al-Zil , al-Qaedas evocatively named shadow army. According to some Pakistani reporters, the 313 brigade was behind the recent assault on a prominent Pakistani naval base near Karachi, an embarrassing raid that saw two multi-million dollar American-made surveillance aircraft reduced to scrap metal. Saleem Shahzad, the Pakistani journalist whose murder last week?(possibly at the hands of Pakistans notorious military intelligence agency, the ISI) made international headlines, is one of the only reporters to have interviewed Kashmiri an excellent piece thats worth reading. Shahzad has long speculated on the links between al-Qaeda figures like Kashmiri and sympathizers within the Pakistani military establishment and the ISI; his last ever article traced the connection in the context of the Karachi navy base raid. Its an investigative interest that likely led Shahzad to an early grave. Yet if Kashmiri has indeed been taken out, then its a positive step forward. Al-Qaeda has lost one of its most important strategic operatives, a man who, along with Saif al-Adel, was possibly running the show. Moreover, Kashmiri was always on the move in Pakistans tribal areas, wary of the drones seeking him it would have required real local intelligence to find him and may be a sign that Pakistans military is finally coming around to purging some of the demons in its midst. Or at least, in the wake of Osama bin Ladens discovery and death, making a damn good show of doing so. They are most commonly associated with audio interconnection, but are also used for lighting control, low-voltage power supplies, and other applications. The connectors are circular in design and have between 3 and 7 pins. Designed for male and female type connectors, the XLR connector represents an international standard for this type of audio component. While it may possess up to seven pins, three pins are most common. It may be mounted to a cable or chassis, as for a rack-mounted audio component. It is first designed by Canon, it takes its name from the original X connector, which was later modified with a release latch (L) and rubber seal (R). Most commonly used for analog audio, this connector locks into its port with a balanced connection. A ground pin adds safety and reduces unwanted interference when plugged in during a live performance. The Natural way to Dye...h3 Yesterday, I got out the dye pots to work on the background color for my new rug Padula Romance . I wanted to make the light background more mellow and less bright. So -- I went through my stash and found some random buttermilk wool from a past rug and some other honey colored wools and decided to stew them together with my ivory blanket wool and winter white blazer wool. The color wasnt moving much with the borax I put in, so I looked around me and saw the onion basket had lots of orange papery skins in.... So I put them in a pot and boiled them. and then I remembered the Black Walnut tree on the next block and took a bag outside with me and gathered about 20 half-rotted Black Walnuts and put them to boiling as well.... Why didnt I just use my favorite Buttermilk dye formula??? I Do Not Know!... Anyway I got about 1 quart of onion skin dye and 1 quart of black walnut dye and spooned it in my stewing wool by tablespoons till I got it where I wanted it - I did not use much at all ... Added some vinegar to set the wool (the borax had freed some of the dye and I wanted to set it.) and let it simmer for awhile. When it was ready I let it cool on our front porch. Then I drained it and washed it on gentle cycle with a little (1/2 cap full) of Woolite and let it dry -- ready to hook! The New PR I had the opportunity to speak to the local chapter of PRSA this past week about how PR is changing from working with the press, to working with customers. After thinking about it in depth for the past couple of weeks, I am more and more convinced that the customer frontier is where most PR will happen in the future. Admittedly, there are others who are way out ahead of me on this? Ben McConnell and Jackie Huba are two. Still others have called this a 360 degree approach to PR. One thought before I go on: today we are all in the PR business. So even if your title isn't PR specialist or something like it, if you engage with the public (press, customers, vendors, employees), the new PR applies to you too. Here's it is in a nutshell: In the salad days, a public relations specialist spent most of their time working with the press?pitching story ideas, following up on requests for information, offering quotes for articles, etc. The really good PR people developed close relationships with reporters, in a true you-scratch-my-back-I'll-scratch-yours fashion. When the press did a story and needed a quote from a customer, the PR specialist vetted the best customers and forwarded their names to the reporter for an interview?knowing that they would say only positive things. The reporter also relied on the PR staff to provide information about the company, because resources for finding it on their own were limited. Things have changed. While good PR people still pitch stories and develop good relationships with the press, they've lost the control they once had over the process. Reporters are less inclined to take what the company says at face value (you can blame Tyco, Enron, and WorldCom for that). And when they want to talk to customers, they don't ask PR for a list of people who will only say nice things about you, they hit the search engines and read what customers are saying online. Good and bad. So PR is changing to engage customers. Today, the best PR people are getting involved in crafting the customer experience, in beta testing products, and in talking to customers so they understand what customers are thinking and saying about their company and products. They are engaging not just the happy customers, but the detractors as well. And while they may not be able to fix every problem (or make every customer completely happy), they do understand why some interactions go bad and are working to fix those processes to prevent them from ruining other customer's experiences. Today, the press frames their questions based on what they learn about you online?so you better know what people are saying and be able to talk with the press about what you are doing to fix or improve your product. This is the new PR. Fortunately there are a lot of resources on the subject. Ben and Jackie's book, Creating Customer Evangelists is a good start. The Ultimate Question by Fred Reicheld is also good. Neither is about PR in the traditional sense, but both are about what PR must become to be successful. UPDATE: Thanks to Brian who requested I post the presentation at SlideShare. Three Cheers for Protestant Baroque!h3 I am currently enjoying the third of David Brown s five books exploring the way that God is mediated through varieties of human experience - imagination, the arts, a sense of place, the body. God and Enchantment of Place contains a long reflection on the ways in which a variety of architectural styles have the ability to reflect Gods immanence and transcendence to differing degrees. I am impressed both by the range of styles considered and by Browns refusal to draw too sharp a distinction between the mediating potential of sacred and secular buildings. One area I am particularly grateful for is his reflection on baroque architecture. He focuses his attention on the Italian baroque of Bernini and Borromini but does give a passing mention to the German masterpieces of the later baroque, such as the pilgrimage church of Vierzehnheiligen with its astonishing central altar-shrine arrangement. Brown picks up the theatricality of baroque, its ability to disorient and trick us into new perspectives, its delight in blurring boundaries and its love of the curve. But, while he makes some mention of the minimal forays of English church architecture into this field, he does not spend much time on the extensive use made of baroque styles in northern European prote
